Can nurses improve the implementation of person and family centred care with geriatric patients?

My Topic for my Critical Review of Practice Module is Can nurses improve the Implementation of person and family centred care with geriatric patients?

The reason I choose this topic was before applying for my nursing course I worked with elderly patients for over 15 years and when I qualified as a registered nurse am looking at employment in that sector in community. I was also inspired to go into that field because I looked after my gran parents.

My intention for this topic was during my placement in 11/2020 I saw how this current pandemic has put a strain on families whose loved ones are in hospital I noticed, family member are not allowed to visit their loved ones in hospital because of covid, these made families stressed, angry not knowing what’s happing to their loved ones in hospital.

I answered lot of telephone conversations were family member are shouting on the phone because there was lack of communication between the health care professional and family members.

During this pandemic there are shortage of staffs, staffs that are off sick, this situation put lots of strain on the ward where nurses and doctors are very busy and don’t have time to speak to family member.

I totally understand what these families are going through because they are not been involve in their loved one’s care, some of them were not allowed to spend time or say goodbye to their loved ones during their last days of life this is very devastating for these families.
