PEER DISCUSSION RESPONSE:
Metabolic acidosis occurs when the body produces too much acid. The kidneys are unable to remove the acid from to create balance in the body.

Metabolic alkalosis occurs when HCO3 increases in the body. Respiratory acidosis occurs when the lungs are not able to move out the carbon dioxide in the body.

Respiratory alkalosis occurs when the carbon dioxide levels decrease in the body.
Arterial blood gas results in respiratory alkalosis are as follows:
PH= greater than 7.45

HCO3 = Low

PCO2= Lower than 35

Some symptoms that are expected when a patient is experiencing respiratory alkalosis are hyperventilation (fast breathing) dizziness, heart palpitations, chest pains, confusion, dry mouth (O’Connell, 2017). Nurses will also check for changes that include fatigue and lethargy.

The main causes of respiratory alkalosis includes COPD, pulmonary embolism, asthma, heart attacks. (O’Connell 2017). Another important cause is hyperventilation, which is because of the amount of CO2 exhaled by the body.

The nurse will know the body is compensating when levels begin to get closer to normal. The kidneys will begin to excrete HCO3 and decrease the blood’s pH levels. When the bodies pH levels begin to decrease, this will be known as compensation.
