Were the study controls maintained as indicated by the design? Did the design include an intervention that was consistently implemented?

Assignment Data Collection

Select a quantitative research study.  Critically appraise the article using the following guidelines:

Were the recruitment and selection of study participants clearly described and appropriate?

Were the data collected in a consistent way?

Were the study controls maintained as indicated by the design? Did the design include an intervention that was consistently implemented?

Did the researchers obtain data from an existing database?  If so, did the data obtained address the study purpose and objectives, questions, or hypotheses?  Were the reliability and validity of the database addressed in the research report?

Assignment Identifying and Determining Your Statistical Analysis Approach

Critically Appraising the Results From Quantitative or Outcomes Studies

Choose a Quantitative or Outcome Study Article

Identify the statistical procedures used.

Judge whether these procedures were appropriate for the purpose and the hypotheses questions, or objectives of the study, and for the level of measurement of the variables.

Determine whether the researchers’ interpretations of the results are an appropriate evaluation of the clinical importance of the study’s findings.

Assignment Critical Appraisal

Select a quantitative research article for appraisal and clearly state the title in your submission.  Answer the following questions:

Was the focus of the study on examining relationships, making predictions, and/or determining group differences?

Were the results from the analyses clearly presented and appropriately interpreted?

Were the results statistically significant?

Was the power presented for any nonsignificant finding?  If so, was the power adequate for the study, at least 0.80 or stronger?

Were the study controls maintained as indicated by the design? Did the design include an intervention that was consistently implemented?
