Scenario

Greg and Susan

Greg and Susan have been required to attend a family centre due to concerns around their neglect of their two children, 4 year old twin boys (non identical). When at the centre, the parents appear rather chaotic and find it difficult to make the most of the opportunity to engage with the boys.

Both Greg and Susan are in debt with loan agents but appear not to know what benefits they are able to receive. Greg has low self-esteem as he has been unemployed for 6 months. He used to work in a factory that was closed. There are concerns regarding the boys as they often appear in the same clothes which are dirty. Susan says this is due to the lack of money.

You are a social worker based at the family centre and you have been asked to work with the family. Decide which social work theory can be applied as the main focus of your work with the family. Tell the story of what happens (you can add your own details about their life and circumstances). Explain the theory and how it is used in the work with the family. Describe the interaction between people as the work progresses. Discuss what social work skills are being used. You can show how other theories also relate. Give a critical commentary on the unfolding scenario.
