ASSIGNMENT TASK
This is a three part assignment consisting of an assessment report, a care plan and a reflective commentary
ASSIGNMENT ACTIVITY
i. You are a social work student on placement and you have been allocated a case during morning briefing. You are required to undertake an assessment and develop a care plan (1500 words).
ii. You are also required to write a reflective commentary about the assessment and care planning process drawing on broader debates and ideas beyond the case study (1500 words).
ASSIGNMENT BRIEF
Presentation of the assessment and care plan
1. You will use an assessment template similar to that used by child and family social workers
2. You must prepare your assessment report and care plan in a professional, analytical and succinct way, being mindful that such reports are available to be read by service users including children, professionals, legal representatives and in decision making settings such as court, fostering and adoption panels.
3. You will be expected to demonstrate that you are familiar with the relevant themes and debates, literature and research relating to the case you have been allocated, drawing on relevant theory to help you to analyse the information you have gathered and to support your ‘professional’ opinion
4. Your assessment recommendations will represent your assessment of need, distinguishing between areas of need, risk and harm, and building on safety and protective measures.
5. Within the body of your assessment report you will need to be clear about fact, ‘professional’ opinion and hypothesis.
6. Remember you are accountable for your professional opinion and therefore need to be clear about the evidence base you are relying on.
7. The care plan should clearly reflect the assessment you have carried out
Presentation of the reflective commentary
8. You should demonstrate critical and analytical thinking as you reflect on the processes involved when undertaking assessment and developing care plans
9. Your knowledge of contemporary themes and debates should be evident and you will need to draw upon theoretical perspectives and concepts to deepen your critical reflection about child and family social work, assessment and care planning. (For instance, the concept of childhood, child development and children’s rights; the impact of child protection, policy and legislation; contemporary social issues such as poverty, mental ill health, drugs; the impact of, public and service responses to abuse such as neglect, CSE, domestic abuse, the impact of transitions and outcomes such as to and from care…this is not an exhaustive suggestion list but just to help broaden your thinking)

10. You should critically and analytically draw on contemporary policy and legislation to explain how and why you carried out the assessment as you did, considering challenges and barriers

11. You should consider the model of assessment and care planning method and its legislative framework outlining tensions and dilemmas such power, cultural appropriateness etc.
12. You should discuss areas of discrimination and oppression within the assessment process and within the context of wider institutional and social structures. A good reflective commentary will also consider the service user/social worker relationship.
13. You should evaluate your care plan and situate it within the context of contemporary practice dilemmas considering needs led and resource led planning. However, you will also need to defend your care plan within this context whilst critically reflecting on social work practice issues
14. You must refer to academic literature and research throughout your piece and use standard academic referencing throughout
15. Honours Degree Grading Criteria – FQHE Level 5 will be applied in relation to marking the assignment. This criteria can be located through this link: http://www.bradford.ac.uk/aqpo/documents-templates-and-downloads/a-z/institutional-grading-criteria.php
