You have noticed fiction between your team Rita (CN) and the rest of the nursing team. Rita has not disclosed any information to you but just the passing remarks saying, “because l am not familiar with the computer program in PACU they are giving me pineapples” and avoids any further discussion.
How are you going to engage Rita in the conversation for more information and resolve the friction between the team and Rita?

On another occasion your team revealed that since being promoted, there had been some neglect in social dynamics because there is minimal to no social interaction as before when you were the CN. They also voice that you spent lot of your time in the office, just being their boss from being friendly and bubbly colleague.

Case 8
In your weekly team meeting one of your agenda was to discuss team skillset and dynamics. Further discussion raises issues about their concerns and experience. The Registered Nurse (RN) Katie and the rest of the nursing team felt that the new CN did not support them as much as their previous CN and there is a lack of direct supervision and involvement, especially between PACU and OT.

Moreover, the team disclosed issues with Rita (CN) claiming that she is not competent and skilled enough to support the team, mostly in complex open surgeries and laparoscopic procedures. The meeting disclosed as it was causing a lot of distress among new beginner staff who need a lot of guidance, coaching, and intensive supervision.

Discussion with Rita CN revealed that she did not had any experience with Laparoscopic and Urology procedures nor in PACU. Despite the lack of skillsets Rita was able to secure the highly clinical position in the unit. You are not familiar with Rita’s recruitment process as this was completed before your appointment in NUM role.
