What Is a Community?

We are surrounded by overlapping circles of communities all of the time. All clients and all social service organizations exist within the context of multiple communities. For this essay, look around you and notice a community you haven’t considered before.

We often associate the term “community” with a geographically bound group of people. Expand your mental picture.

Notice social communities connected by a commitment to a group, social stratification by income or class or ethnicity, and political community represented by group representation.
Please choose one community, and describe the following characteristics:
– the social connection that binds the people in the community
– a function of the community
– a theory that helps us understand the community (a theory could be systems theories, human behavior theories, or power, politics, and change theories)
