Explain in detail the mechanisms that underpin the development of disease in adult humans.

Disease picked: Rheumatoid Arthritis

Assessment- Presentation of a human disease in poster form, accompanied by oral presentation of the poster aimed at a lay audience.

Learning outcomes:

1. Explain in detail the mechanisms that underpin the development of disease in adult humans.

2. Outline the mechanism through which the most commonly prescribed drugs operate via in order to bring about their therapeutic effect in the adult human body.

3. Relate pathology and pharmacology knowledge to specific organ systems in adult humans in order to demonstrate a detailed appreciation of the core disease and the main classes of medicines used in their management.

Assessment brief:
• Design a scientific poster presenting any human disease that involves infection or the immune system and the drugs used to treat it.

• Explain in detail the underlying cause (bacterial or viral species, autoimmune condition, etc.), the clinical manifestations (acute and chronic).

-Which body systems it affects?
-What drugs are used to treat it?
-What are the drugs’ mechanisms of action and how effective are they?
-Are there any serious side effects to the drugs, and if so, how can these
be treated?

• If your disease of choice is due to microbial infection.

-Are there any known resistance mechanisms?
describe if and how the microbes can mutate to evade the
drug’s action (bacterial, viral)

Format:
• Poster should be A3 in size and saved as .pdf file.
• It can be portrait or landscape.
• Try not to cram too much text in and use an appropriate size and style of font.
• Your text should be readable when scaled to fir the page.
• Remember a picture is worth thousand words.
• Your poster should be visually pleasing as well as informative and make sure there is a logical flow.

Part 2.
Record a 5-minute presentation of your poster using Zoom (share your screen so you can point to each section as you talk), but imagine you are explaining it to a lay audience such as a non-scientific but interested family member.

Think about keeping it simple and interesting, drawing out the key aspects of your poster without getting bogged down with too much detail.
