Why are the terms “modern” and “modernity” so heavily contested?

This is from a module that is concerned with the time period from the enlightenment up until the modern day, and uses global examples.

The additional materials that I have attached state the sources that may be used. Lauzon, ‘Modernity’, in Jerry Bentley (ed.) The Oxford Handbook of World History (Oxford, 2011), pp. 72-84, as well as at least 6 other sources.
