Write research and how it meets the codes and conventions of the genre of book/film it is promoting, with the identification of design principles and elements (LO2).

Photoshop

Using Adobe Photoshop, produce either:

A cover for an existing book of your choice

A poster for an existing film of your choice.

Note that we want to see your own creative and alternative design – not a copy of the
original.

Both designs should use the dimensions given below and be exported for both print and web in their relevant colour spaces:

You must produce an A4 poster with a 3mm bleed around all edges (portrait or
landscape, depending on it being a film poster or a book cover, respectively) (LO3).

You must save this as a PDF for print, in which case the colour mode should be set to
CMYK on export (LO5).

You must export a web size JPEG version with a long edge size of 1200px. This should
be exported with an RGB profile (LO5).

You should aim to include these things within your design (LO4):

Use of Text – edited and transformed.

Use of shape and or paths

Use of gradients/transparency/stroke

Use of layers, layer masks and layer styles.

PRESENTATION

You will create a 10-minute presentation (max.). This must be a narrated PowerPoint. (Details on how to do this can be found on your module reading list.)

Your presentation must cover the following:

Your understanding of the brief – content and purpose (LO1).

The research you have carried out and how it has informed the development of your own work – target audience and their needs (LO1).

The research you have carried out and how it meets the codes and conventions of the
genre of book/film it is promoting, with the identification of design principles and
elements (LO2).

The development of your own work – technical and aesthetics (LO2 & LO4).
Photoshop techniques used – to be discussed in stages. You must include print screens
of your process and main actions to demonstrate knowledge of the software features
and of digital image manipulation (LO3 & LO4).

Final outcome and its effectiveness.

A list of references, in the APA referencing style, that must include a reference for each of the images you have used in your final poster/book cover. This should be the last slide(s) of your presentation. You can find information on how to reference on Aula and in your Module Guide.
Guidelines READ CAREFULLY:

You are required to submit your presentation and final assignment piece via Aula Hand In and you must include the following:

You must credit any influences, current practice or other sources utilised in the development of your work (adhering to copyright restrictions), using the APA referencing system.

This means you may not use any of the original images from the film/book in questions.
You must look for images on royalty-free websites. You can a list of such websites on Aula.

All students must submit their Assignment via Aula HandIn. You can compress your portfolio into one named zip file to upload or upload all files individually.

We do not accept submissions via links to any platforms (such as OneDrive).

Make sure you upload your work early and do not leave it until the last minute to avoid any delays due to technical issues.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

You will be asked to upload at least one draft while working towards your final assignment. This is to be uploaded to Aula and will ensure you obtain feedback in preparation for your submission. Date to be confirmed by your module tutor.

You will also be asked to upload work developed while in class every week. This will allow your tutors to identify areas where you may need help improving.

If there is anything that you do not understand about this assignment brief once you have read it fully, or you have any concerns about it, please contact the Module Leader immediately. Their name and contact details are at the top of this brief.
