Letter to Elected Official

The purpose of the paper is to give you a chance to research a current State Bill that has been introduced to the State Assembly or State Senate.

This assignment will assist you with the development of practical experiences of written communication with your local representative. It is important to let him or her know your views regarding potential bills that may become California Laws.

Objective: Upon the completion of these assignments, student will be able to identify a current bill, the process of a bill becoming a law, develop their research skills, and apply letter writing skills in support or opposition of a state bill.

Writing a Letter to Your Representative

Remember: the Legislator has staff to write extensive analysis of each bill, so keep it to the point. You must let them know:
a) Who you are and your position ( Your Name: student at California State University, Stanislaus)

b) Give a brief introduction why you are writing this letter, identify the current bill you would like to discuss, and a summary of the explanation of the bill

c) Sound rationale in support or opposition of you bill: what your position is; and why

d) A few key facts (research article) for supporting or opposing about your issue, state where you got the information that lead you to the decision to support or oppose.

e) Cite the Article as followed: Title, Author (year). Put this is the body of your letter and do not include a reference page.

f) Summary is your conclusion including your salutation. It is also where you ask them to support or oppose the bill.

g) Typed, mechanics, grammar, sentence structure, letter format

h) APA style is Times New Roman 12 point font (these are older person with potential vision issues, if it is too small or not standard font they cannot read it.
