“The methods section describes actions to be taken to investigate a research problem and the rationale for the application of specific procedures or techniques used to identify, select, process, and analyze information applied to understanding the problem, thereby, allowing the reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall validity and reliability.

The methodology section of a research paper answers two main questions: How was the data collected or generated? And, how was it analyzed? The writing should be direct and precise and always written in the past tense(Kallet, 2004)”.

Starting off the research study would be through the use of quantitative research and data. Using the Department of  Veteran Affairs’ databases, the first step would be using the sample size of veterans ages 18-50; still living, with a primary diagnosis of PTSD with a secondary diagnosis of SUDs.

Next, would be to narrow my sample size, using filters of who of these possible candidates received treatment or been inpatient more than once. An additional filter would be a reason for admission. If the reason for admissions contained alcohol intoxication, suicidal ideation, homicidal ideations or illicit drug use, that amount would then be the total sample size.

Next for methods of measurements would take place through a qualitative approach. Through the use of questionnaires evaluating the participants’ experience in previous treatment. It would consist of interviewing participants on what type of treatment they received and if it did or did not relate to their primary diagnosis. Oobservations encountered will also be collected as evidence by in-field notes of readmissions.

Data collection will consist of a thematic analysis. Utilizing surveys, interviews, observations and archival data collected, we will be able to see how something affects another through the use of patterns or themes that are identified or interpreted. The surveys, interviews and observations will be able to help show how lack of treatment of PTSD affects the continued substance use causing readmission into treatment and inpatient facilities. The archival data collected will be able to show the issues’ relevance in different time eras and ages.
