This assignment is designed to offer you a more in-depth perspective on a topic that historians consider to be relevant to pre-Confederation Canadian History, (1250-1500 words).

You may select your topic from any of the course content on a topic that historians consider relevant to Canadian history before 1867.

This is a research project: you must present a clear thesis and support your argument with evidence. You must reference at least five scholarly sources; at least two of these must be primary sources. If you are not sure whether a source is scholarly, please check with me before you submit your assignment (e.g. Wikipedia is not a scholarly source).

Your paper must be presented in Standard English in a clear concise manner. All work must be your own. When you rely on secondary sources or provide direct quotations, references must be provided. Unacknowledged use of sources—through extensive summaries or quotations—constitutes plagiarism, which will be penalized.

All assignments should be formatted in Chicago Manual of Style using footnotes and including a bibliography. (Your footnotes and bibliography will not be included in your final word count). Refer to the research paper guidelines posted on Moodle for a successful submission.
