Module: Trajectories of Modernity in Korean Literature and Film.

Theme: Landscapes: Views from the Periphery; Migration, Liminality and Hybridity.

How to Approach the Assignment:
Select the primary source(s) (literary work, film) you wish to discuss in relation to the theme or topic of your choice.

Based on your reading and/or viewing of the primary source(s), what are your provisional responses? Identify specific examples from the primary source(s) that support your arguments.

Refer to secondary (critical) sources as much as possible, using the physical and electronic resources, identify material that is relevant to your topic. You can begin your search by looking at the list of further reading and viewing provided for each weekly lecture topic

Plan an outline of your essay with a view to develop your response or arguments through a structured essay that includes:

An introduction to your inquiry and primary source(s);

A selective and critical analysis covering specific aspects with key examples from the primary source(s), with reference to secondary sources (at least six or seven books, book chapters, journal articles, or web-based academic sources) to support and contextualise your discussion;

A conclusion to summarise your main argument (if relevant, also highlight the significance of your topic).

Give your essay a title that captures its main focus. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR ALL ASSIGNMENTS

Write an essay of 3,000 words on a topic of your choice related to the themes addressed in this module, with reference to at least one novel or two short stories (or novellas), and/or one film as your primary source.

AS2 ESSAY MARKING CRITERIA

Overall, students are expected to demonstrate that they have:

acquired a substantial grasp of the topic and related scholarship;

carefully and critically read/viewed your chosen primary source(s);

formed your own ideas and interpretations to present a specific argument.

Content, Research, Knowledge & Understanding (20 pts)—did you choose an appropriate topic and formulate an argument? did you select appropriate primary and secondary sources? did you demonstrate knowledge of the content of the module? were your sources used effectively and with understanding of the broader (historical) context?

Organisation and Coherence (30 pts)—is your argument clear? was your essay structured clearly to support the argument you were making? did you have a proper conclusion?

Critical thinking (20 pts)—was your essay clearly focused on the research topic? were your conclusions effectively supported by evidence? was your conclusion reflective of the evidence presented? is there a critical evaluation of your sources?

Innovation/Creativity/Originality (10 pts)—does your essay demonstrate that you have formed your own ideas and interpretations? does it present an original approach or argument?

Writing style/Grammar/Spelling (10 pts)—did you express yourself clearly in English with proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar?

Referencing and Format (10 pts)—did you follow the citations/referencing, formatting and cover sheet guidelines as outlined above?
