For this assignment, write a 2-4 page literacy narrative focused on a significant experience you had that dealt specifically with reading and/or writing, something that shaped your attitude towards writing or who you are as a reader and/or writer.
It can be a story from your childhood or a relatively recent event; be creative and try to choose something that matters to you.
Your narrative should incorporate the literary elements of plot, character, setting, theme, and descriptive language. Think of your task as finding new significance for yourself in these experiences and sharing your discoveries with your readers in ways that hold their interest and bring them insight about the significance of learning, language, reading, or writing through an implied theme (although this theme might be explicitly stated, most likely at the end of the narrative).
Some characteristics of a literacy narrative/memoir that your essay should include:
An engaging title that hints at the narrative’s overall meaning or “theme”
An introduction that captures the reader’s interest or sets a scene
A complication, a tension or a conflict that must be resolved in some way by the end of the story
A plot that draws the reader forward as the narrative moves through a series of scenes or stages
Rich and vivid details that give the story greater imagery, texture, and impact
A new understanding or revelation that presents a moment of growth, transformation, or clarity in the writer
A statement that focuses the reader and shares the significance/importance of the event.
