Identify the root cause of a significant instructional issue impacting student learning and develop an action plan to address the issue.

Discuss the process for the Final Exam Project-Based Learning (PBL).  Identify each step and clarify the expectations for each step.

Identify 2 knowledge, skills, or mindsets you will have to develop to successfully complete the PBL.

The response should be 2 to 3 well-developed paragraphs in length, reflecting on the prompt above.

Goal:  Guide perspective principals in the development of  knowledge, skills, and mindsets to:

conduct a needs assessment;

identify a significant instructional problem based on the data in the needs assessment;

analyze the issue to find the root cause;

develop an improvement plan to address the issue; and

evaluate the plan for effectiveness.

This project will be divided into smaller components and will be due on various dates throughout the semester.  Each component is designed to build on the previous component to help scaffold learning.

PBL Scenario:

As the campus principal new to the district, you are charged with improving the instruction on the campus.  The superintendent asked you to identify the root cause of a significant instructional issue impacting student learning and develop an action plan to address the issue.

First, you will need to conduct a needs assessment (Step 1 and self-assessment rubric) to gain a better understanding of how certain components of the community, district, and campus are currently impacting student learning.

Second, you will need to reflect on the information from Step 1 to determine the specific area of student learning needing improvement and the root cause of the issue. Be sure to drill down to a specific instructional problem.  Too often, systemic issues are identified as instructional issues. For example, tardiness and attendance impact learning, but they are a systemic issue – not an instructional issue.

Third, you will need to create an action plan to address the identified instructional issue.  The district provides a planning template for you to use.

You will need to develop clear, measurable goals and identify specific instructional strategies (be sure to use the Knight textbook) to complete the plan. You will also need to provide a narrative to support the development process of the plan and clarify how the plan will be evaluated.

Fourth, you will need to evaluate your action plan for viability and reflect on your leadership to monitor and adjust the plan as needed.

Identify the root cause of a significant instructional issue impacting student learning and develop an action plan to address the issue.
