EBP Project: Tool for Appraising a Systematic Review

Evidence Based Project: Each student will participate in the development of an Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Project. This project may be done individually or in a group of 2 students if approved by course instructor.

The topic for the PICOT question will originate from the service arena (student’s work environment) and the project will be presented back to the service agency.

Each student will follow the EBP process from the formation of the PICOT question through the review of the literature (including research article critiques and formation of a literature matrix) to the synthesis/evaluation of the research/evidence and formation of a recommendation based upon the evidence.  Components of this assignment include:

Formation and Validation of the PICOT question

Critique of a qualitative research article related to the topic/PICOT question

Critique of a quantitative research article related to the topic/PICOT question

Evidence Summary of no less than 10 articles related to the topic/PICOT question

Formation of recommendation in response to the PICOT question.

Preparation of Power Point for online presentation

Preparation of professional poster for presentation at service agency.

Complete form “EBP Project: Tool for Appraising a Systematic Review” on one of your systematic review article and submit it WITH THE ARTICLE (scanned as a pdf file) . If you are working as a team of 2 students, each student needs to submit a critique on a different article.

 Screening Questions:

 1) Are all relevant papers identified in the review?

2) How is the quality of the papers assessed?

 3) How are the results summarized?

Detailed Questions:

4)Does the review address a clearly focused research question?

5)What are the inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies?

6) Are the interventions similar between studies?

7) Is it reasonable to combine the studies?

8) What measures of occurrences or exposure are reported in each study?

9)Are the magnitude and precision of the effects reported?

10)Are participants in the review studies similar to your patients?

11)Are all important outcomes considered?

12)Would you consider a change in practice based on the results?
