Beloved by Toni Morrison
Read about the story of Margaret Garner, a slave who would rather see her young children dead than be subjected to the tyranny of slavery.
However, after reading Beloved by Toni Morrison, a novel based on Garner’s act, understand how a mother could be driven to commit such a devasting act. Beloved is truly a work of art and, like all works of art, looking at it closely can make it more beautiful and profound.
Write an essay in which you analyze Morrison’s writing to determine whether (for you) it was her characters, themes and/or the action in the novel that perhaps served to change your mind about the actions of a Margaret Garner.
