Explore in detail a particular one health issue (either a particular disease or a particular disease outbreak) and explain how can the disease be prevented.

Case study (individual assessment 40%). SARS as chosen health topic.

This case study will allow you to explore in detail a particular one health issue (either a particular disease or a particular disease outbreak).  It is important that you do not just concentrate on one particular aspect of the disease (or outbreak) e.g. just the epidemiology or just the characteristics of the disease or just the ecology, but rather take a one health approach and cover a range of aspects in the case study.  You need to address the points below, the important thing is not just to list off some facts.

The question regarding what will be the impact of environment change on the disease will require you to do some hard thinking.  In most cases you will not find references that give you the direct answer.  You will have to take what you’ve found and what you know and then work out what the potential impacts will be (remember you need to justify it).

The case study should be under 2000 words (excluding references) and should include:

The disease (basic information about the disease and its associated infectious agent) (10%)

Animal-human-ecosystem dynamics (30%)

How can the disease be prevented (remember One Health approach) (20%)

What additional knowledge is required (15%)

What will be the impact of environmental change on the disease (e.g. climate change, over population, land clearing etc) (15%)

The disease is not to be the same disease used for other assessments.

Text over 2000 word limit will not be included in assessment.
