According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, a concept is something conceived in the mind, an abstract or generic idea generalized from particular instances. The concept of caring in South Africa is referred to as Ubuntu. Ubuntu roughly translates to “humanness” or ” a person is a person through other persons” (Nolte & Downing, 2019). Ubuntu is the concept that community relationships is vital to its people. In order to have good health, you must have good relationships within your community.
Three pillars of the idea of Ubuntu are respect and dignity, solidarity and harmony. All community members must show respect and dignity to all people regardless of any differences. Ubuntu stresses the idea of community through the idea of solidarity. People rely on others in their community. The people believe in a shared responsibility. Harmony can be attained if the relationships within the community are close and sympathetic. Interpersonal relationships are very important. It is for the good of the community to make and keep good relationships with others.
An antecedent of the concept of Ubuntu is the characteristic of such a strong communal bond. An unbreakable interpersonal bond within the community that holds the interests of the community above all else. A consequence of Ubuntu is that “importance of the principles of reciprocity, inclusivity and a sense of shared destiny is highlighted” (Nolte & Downing, 2019).
In the South African’s concept of Ubuntu, the empirical referents relate directly to the defining attributes. Ubuntu’s sense of unbreakable communal bonds, the respect and dignity for others demonstrate the existence of the idea of Ubuntu.
The concept of Ubuntu is relevant to Leininger’s Culture Care Theory. The theory states that nurses cannot separate the patients from their community, from their culture. They are one and the same. Health is a restorative state of well-being that is culturally constituted, defined, valued, and practiced by individuals or groups, which enables them to function in their daily lives (McFarland & Alamah, 2019). Ubuntu focuses on the patients community and the CCT also focuses not just on the patient but their community to help them reach a positive health outcome.
