1.1. Based on your reading of the article, “Loose Threads,” how do you see yourself in the world and ways that you have embraced the perspective of others?

I see myself contributing to the greater good of the world, being a part of the “Blanket”. I think as nurses we generally have that view of helping others. So ultimately I see myself contributing to what helps us all. I have been involved in sports since a very young age and I believe that has instilled in me the importance of a team. Individually there are many things we can accomplish, but nothing compared to what we can accomplish together. I would say I embrace the perspective of others all the time Working in the hospital. Between the patients and my peers, there are times when I have to take a step back and see something from another view point.

2. Based on your reading of the article, Christ and Cultures: Multiculturalism and the Gospel of Christ, how do you think God views individuals and cultures?

Honestly I Believe that God intentionally created many cultures, and for us to be individuals within these cultures to show us one thing. That no matter how different we appear on the outside, we are still connected to one another and ultimately want the same things for ourselves and family. I think he intended for us to embrace our differences and learn from each other and not divide ourselves based on those cultural differences. He placed unique qualities in each culture and if we take the time to listen and understand we can learn so much.

3. Explain how understanding your own identity and culture will help with becoming a culturally competent healthcare practitioner.

I believe understanding your own identity and culture will help you better communicate and understand other cultures. Understanding your own views, values and possible bias’s can lead to being more open and wanting to learn about other cultures. Being open to listening and learning is a big step in becoming culturally competent, and understanding yourself is essential.

I think the article said it perfectly about how we are all connected and how we can affect one person’s life or that it make affect someone else’s life but it began with us. I believe everyone is connected in this world whether it is direct or indirect. We all work interchangeably to contribute to this world we live in. Some people choose to live their life more closed off than others, which would entail “less threads” in their blanket but they still contribute to the world in some way.

Based on your reading of the article, Christ and Cultures: Multiculturalism and the Gospel of Christ, how do you think God views individuals and cultures?

I believe Jesus can distinguish between individuals and cultures in terms on “How they are” meaning the way they look, eat, live, speak, and act in similarity. Whereas, Jesus ultimately sees us as “Who we are” in which we all connect such as doing no harm to others, learning to coexist, how we all look to him for guidance and answers, how we connect with one another and contribute to the world. On the outside individuals may differ but in the inside we all hold the same core values of being human.

Growing up Vietnamese but living in a town that was predominantly Hispanic and African American, I learned about my culture and others and how they are different and similar. Just by having more exposure to other individual of other cultures makes me more competent as a health practitioner because you learn the do’s and dont’s, cultural norms, specific lifestyles, and tendencies within other cultures and how to address and treat them differently but with the same amount of advocacy and respect.
