Essay Paper: Brown
In “Detour,” an essay published in the New York Times Magazine’s “Lives” column, Brown uses vivid details and clear language to convey the struggles he, his brother, and sister faced.
In a five to six-paragraph essay, discuss the following:
1. Which details do you find most vivid and how do they help Brown portray the people described?
2. How does the clarity of Brown’s language make his essay accessible? Be sure to create a main statement and include the title, genre, and author in your introduction.
Your essay should follow standard five to six-paragraph format.
In addition, you must quote from the text to support each of your assertions about Brown’s writing style and cite in MLA format. Of course, any additional paraphrases and summaries of the text must be cited in MLA style as well. Likewise, you will need a Works Cited page.
