ASSIGNMENT

Step 1:
Now that you have completed the Cause and Effect Diagram, the Five Whys, the Flowchart and the FMEA for the Norton vs. Argonaut Insurance Case, create a summary of the case and in the summary, include your recommendations. This summary is called an SBAR.

The SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation) technique provides a framework for communication between members of the health care team but may also be used as an executive summary of a situation, or in this instance, a case study where you are going to break down the whole “situation” and in the end, provide your recommendations. The SBAR is an easy-to-remember, concrete mechanism useful for framing any conversation or case study, especially critical ones and is a tool you can use in your future. The SBAR also allows for an easy and focused way to set expectations for what will be communicated and how between members of the team, which is essential for developing teamwork and fostering a culture of patient safety.

Reading through the SBAR section of the IHI TFramework tools will give you an idea of the type of an SBAR that is used to communicate to clinicians through a phone conversation. This is just one type of SBAR. In this assignment, your SBAR is going to be set up more like an executive summary of your problem. It is a document you would possibly submit to your organization’s Chief Quality Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, and Health System Medical Director therefore, it needs to be polished and professional because you are explaining a situation to your executive team. There are many formats you can use for the final SBAR, but for your purposes, the document should be on a MS Word document, single spaced in Times Roman 12 point font, and be a minimum of one page.

Listed below are two examples of SBARs. The SBAR used by Social work teams gives examples within the document that should help guide you as you complete your SBAR for this case.

Once you have completed your SBAR for the Norton vs. Argonaut case, you may proceed to Step 2.
