In Poe’s “Ligeia” and Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown,” each protagonist struggles to understand  his wife.

Choose one story: explain how each speaker or main character describes/explains his wife to the reader, and what each wife seems to symbolize. What happens to each wife in the story, and why? What does the message about her role seem to be at the end?
