In Chapter 4, “The Fear Instinct,” the author provides data regarding a few common fears that many people face, including natural disasters, airplane crashes, and terrorism. Rosling reminds us that “there’s no room for facts when our minds are occupied by fear” (103). He then mentions other problems- like contaminated water and alcohol abuse- that cause harm to many more people a year than the larger “media-worthy” incidents, like natural disasters.

Research and Write: Think about a common fear that is not mentioned in the chapter. This might be a fear of yours or of someone you know. See if you can find data that exists about this fear. For example, if you are afraid of a shark attack, search “rates of shark attacks on humans” or “How many people are bitten by sharks each year?” Play with your search until you find a reliable source and meaningful data.
Discuss and explain your findings, your source, and whether or not this data disputes or confirms this fear. If applicable, discuss how the media reports this fear.
