Functionalism is a school of thought that considers mental and behavioral structures to each serve a purpose. So, rather than looking at the structure of the mind, functionalists are primarily concerned with how each structure helps us adapt to our environment.

For example: Color vision is useful because it allows us to more easily tell if fruit is ripe. Fruit is a main staple of our diet so this ability helps us (pre grocery store) to find food more easily.
