Plan a Research Project
Choose a debatable topic, one that has two or more sides. It should be a topic that’s appropriate for educational purposes and that would interest a broad audience. Consider choosing a topic on which people can take action.
You may choose from these topics:
Violence in video games or movies does or does not influence young people.
Using animals as test subjects for medications is ethical or unethical.
Argue what is the best way to reduce homelessness in the United States.
Green energy is or is not a realistic alternative to fossil fuels.
Choose a local issue such as funding cuts or increases for public services like libraries, parks, police. or fire service.
Choose a local issue such as homelessness, environmental problems (waste, water shortages, etc.). or lack of mental health services.
You might write down questions that make you curious.

English I Assignment 1 Research Project
During the next several lessons you will plan and write a research project on a topic of your choice.
The paper will be 3-4 pages long plus a works cited page. The topic for your research project should be a debatable issue—an issue on which there are at least two sides.
The topic should be appropriate for class. Consider using one of the topics suggested in your notebook document. To begin, make a claim that states your position on your chosen topic.
Support your position with solid evidence based on research.

Conducting Research Gather information on your topic by searching for online and print sources.
Organize your sources and your notes. Create an outline for your paper.
As you work, evaluate your research process for criteria such as the relevance of your evidence and the effectiveness of your organizational plan.
