Locke and Hobbes had opposite beliefs when it came to the State of Nature in the sense that Hobbes had a more violent and grim view that Locke. Hobbes thought that the State of Nature was an overall state of war and chaos. Locke’s State of Nature had a more appealing view in that everyone would have mutual respect for one another and their given rights. The main similarity between the two is that they believed in order to have the highest level of peace or harmony in a State of Nature, there needed to be a governing body that would set a common law for everyone to abide by. Locke says the only reason men fight, is when they have to fight for their lives, property, or their freedom. If those are all equally available to men, there will be no need for war.
