Describe the scientific principles that underpin heating, ventilation, acoustics and lighting.

Assignment Brief

A property developer is converting an old warehouse into modern office accommodation. The client is keen to make the working environment for the staff as comfortable as possible. As a consultant, explain how this can be done by addressing the relevant grading criteria.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Know the factors that influence human comfort

When producing your report/presentation, make sure that the following are included:

Task 1 P5

With reference to above scenario, describe the scientific principles that underpin heating, ventilation, acoustics and lighting.

You should pay specific attention to the following areas:

  • Heating – air temperature and mean radiant temperature
  • Ventilation – relative humidity and air movement
  • Acoustics – sound reduction indices and reverberation times.
  • Lighting – illuminance levels and daylight factor.

Task 2 M1

To identify thermal indoor climate using fewer parameters and to avoid measuring the

mean radiant temperature, which is difficult and time consuming to obtain, some integrating

parameters have been developed. The 3 most important are the Operative Temperature (to), the Equivalent Temperature ( teq ) and the Effective Temperature ( ET* ).

Compare the three integrated thermal comfort temperatures in general use (shown above). You must cover the advantages and disadvantages of the three integrated comfort temperatures and explain each of them.
