Module 8: Labour Relations

One of the most complex matters to handle in HR is absence or disability management; these terms will be used interchangeably throughout this module. Absence management is a responsibility that falls under the occupational health and safety area in HR or directly on the HR specialist.

Having the appropriate tools, resources, and professional expertise to handle absenteeism requires a fine balance between operational business needs and the employee’s well-being, while also considering the medical and legal constraints in the work environment.

This module begins with a review of common terms and definitions associated with absence management followed by a review of the absenteeism rates in Canada, establishing a business case for absence management programs in the workplace.

You will also learn about the basic components of an absence management program and the return to work (RTW) process, which includes RTW plans and accommodations.

Employee mental health absences, an example of complex absenteeism, will also be discussed in relation to the RTW process. Lastly, you will explore the relationship between a disability insurance policy and the employment contract.
