This paper discusses the causes of moral distress in the healthcare system, its effects and the barriers to action among practitioners. Further, the paper provides the possible courses of action to address the problem in the healthcare system.
Moral distress is an increasing problem in today’s healthcare system. Increase in the problem has been attributed to various other factors and has been reported as the leading cause of nurses and other health workers leaving their work stations.
Understaffing has been labeled as the major cause of moral distress in the current health care systemLack of enough employees in these health centers leads to compromising the quality of the health care system and as a result, making it prone to errors and risk.
Consequently, the employees become stressed as they face a problem that clashes with their ethics but are unable to take any action to stop it.
