Specific purpose statement: To persuade the audience on the benefits and use of Narcan, as well as to why they should carry it on them regularly. (to prevent opioid overdoses)

• Construct effective opening and closing statements for the speech
• Deliver a formal, persuasive, extemporaneous speech

Persuasive Speaking Learning Objectives

• Goal is to persuade the audience to do something
• It must be something that is do-able for this audience
• It should be something that they are capable of doing this year
• You should provide them with everything they need to know in order to accomplish what you have asked
• You need to demonstrate why they need to do it
• You should stress the advantages of what will happen if they do it

Requirements

• 6-8 minute presentation
• Minimum of 6 sources
o Must use the library’s databases for the majority of sources
o Mix it up! Use journal articles, books, newspapers, magazines, etc.
o Two sources may be used from a search engine search using Google, Yahoo, etc.

Must end in .gov, .edu, or .org
• Must use Monroe’s Motivate Sequence
• Must demonstrate Aristotle’s Modes of Persuasion:
o Ethos
o Pathos
o Logos

• Visual Aid Required: You may choose the visual aid to use for this presentation. You may use a PowerPoint. Before creating a PowerPoint, you must review the article and the presentation of designing and using PowerPoints effectively in a speech before creating one.

If you decide to use a PowerPoint as your visual aid, you will be given extra credit and the presentation must be uploaded with your full sentence outline and work cited page. NOTE: You MUST use the PowerPoint during your presentation to receive the extra credit points.

• Typed full sentence outline utilizing MLA or APA format is required
• Typed work cited page following MLA or APA format is required
• MUST have an audience of 4 to 6 adults
