Discussion Post: Some approaches that could be effective for treating PTSD are cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Cognitive therapy is talk therapy that helps one recognize one’s thoughts, that is, cognitive patterns that keep a person stuck—for example, negative beliefs about oneself and the risk of traumatic things reoccurring. Exposure therapy is a type of behavioral therapy that aids one in safely facing both fearful situations and memories to cope with them effectively. This type of therapy can be beneficial for flashbacks and nightmares. For PTSD, cognitive therapy is used along with exposure therapy. Lastly, EMDR combines exposure therapy with guided eye movements that help one process traumatic memories and change a person’s response to them.
