Will improving photosynthetic efficiency help increase global food production? If so, in what way(s)? In your response, include a discussion on the impact of the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration.

Global food production
According to the United Nations, approximately 957 million people across 93 countries do not have enough to eat. In the 1800s, the world population was 1 billion and has grown to 7.7 billion today. The global demand for food is increasing as the population increases. Unfortunately, plants on average are rather inefficient when it comes to using the sun’s energy to grow.

As a result, scientists are trying to come up with other solutions to solve global hunger such as cloning drought/disease-resistant plants and improving yields by genetically altering plant genomes.
