Assignment

1. Choose 2 comparable foods that you consume regularly (for example 2 fruits, or 2 vegetables – both the same way…raw, dry, steamed, baked, etc.)

3. Calculate the amount of kcal for carbs, protein, and fat using the 4, 4, 9 kcal/g formulas that were described last week. (Hint – There are 4 kcal in a gram of carbohydrates, 4 kcal in a gram of protein, and 9 kcal in a gram of fat.)

4. Compare and contrast the kcal (Calories) of carbs, protein, fat, and fiber content between the 2 foods.

5. Look at the vitamin and mineral info for each food item – do you notice any specific differences? Try to find at least 1 difference in the vitamin or mineral content of the 2 foods.

Answer the following questions and compare/contrast the results in your response for this assignment.

a. What are the 2 food items? Describe them, and the form they are in (raw, cooked, etc.). How often do you consume these 2 foods?

b. What are the differences and similarities in the energy yielding nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat) and fiber? Which food has a higher nutritional content? Explain your answer in detail.

c. Copy and paste the nutritional info for both food items and include it in your post so others can see the results.

d. Were you surprised by the results of your comparison? If so, what aspects of the nutritional content were new to you?

e. Does having the nutritional information influence your future consumption of these 2 items? Why?
